Milton Road Library Evening Event Thursday 22nd February: documentary film about Ramsay MacDonald
Thursday 22 February @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm
From the Darkness into the Light: Ramsay MacDonald, Britain’s first Labour Prime Minister
The discovery of a box of old cine reels, under the stairs of the Lossiemouth home of Ramsay MacDonald, provide insights to his remarkable life and times.
Ramsay MacDonald remains a controversial figure to some and unknown to most. But no-one did more to shape the early Labour Party and make it a credible alternative party of government, replacing the Liberals as the main opposition to the Conservatives.
The events of 1931 and his expulsion from the Labour Party have cast a long shadow over his reputation and achievements which has lasted until today.
This documentary film is being released to coincide with the centennial year of his first term in 1924 as British Prime Minister. The film includes exclusive family photos and cine footage taken by his daughter Ishbel. The film aims to provide a more complete and balanced view of his life and legacy: his compelling personal story is told by two of his grand daughters and members of the Lossiemouth community.
Yvonne M Findlay, filmmaker/producer of the documentary, will present her film and will take Questions and Answers. A number of Cambridge political historians have been invited to join the discussion.
Tickets are free but there will be a collection to support the filmmakers.
As space is limited, please apply for a ticket via Eventbrite here, or leave us a note at the library.
